Edible oils import up 9 pc

TOTAL import of edible oils during the first quarter of the oil season 2004-05 (November 2004 to January 2005) are up 9 per cent at 9,46,302 tonnes, compared to 8,69,620 tonnes during the same period last year, according to data complied by the Solvent Extractors Association of India.

During the period, import of refined oils was 1,10,619 tonnes and crude oils 8,35,683 tonnes.

Palm oil products import declined to 5,60,400 tonnes from 7,65,601 tonnes, whereas import of soft oils, mainly soybean oil, increased to 3,85,902 tonnes (3,63,403 tonnes).

The total import of non-edible oils during the review period was 48,822 tonnes compared to 61,287 tonnes during the corresponding previous period.

Total edible oils import during January was 3,16,571 tonnes, compared to 3,54,477 tonnes in January 2004. The import of non-edible oil was 20,399 tonnes (17,754 tonnes).

Crude palm stearin and palm fatty acid distillate are the major non-edible oils being imported.
