Left firm on review of Electricity Act

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Feb. 15

THE Left parties have reiterated their demand for a review of provisions of the Electricity Act 2003.

In a letter to the Power Minister, Mr P.M. Sayeed, the CPI (M) Member of Parliament, Mr Dipankar Mukherjee, has reiterated the Left parties' concerns regarding several of the provisions of the Act and said that the recently notified National Electricity Policy does not address the issues. Terming the legislation as a "controversial Act", the letter has said that the assurance of a "review of the Electricity Act 2003 in the common minimum programme of the UPA Government remains mere words, eroding the credibility of the UPA Government in the process." The letter states that the Left parties had submitted a note to the Government outlining "serious reservations on some substantive issues" in the Electricity Act 2003. "This required a structured discussion which unfortunately was never held," the letter said.
