`Steep fall in child labour in gem, jewellery industry'

THE level of child labour in the diamond processing industry in India has fallen drastically between 1998 and 2003, according to an A.F. Ferguson report.

The report titled `Prevalence of child labour in Indian gem & jewellery industry', said that the percentage for the industry as a whole declined to 0.31 per cent in 2003 from 0.55 per cent in 1998.

It added that the percentage of child labour in the gemstone industry was estimated at 0.98 per cent; jewellery industry at 0.1 per cent; and synthetic stone industry at 0.31 per cent. A total of 663 manufacturing units across 21 locations in the country were studied.

Mr Bakul Mehta, Chairman, Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), said, "I am happy to notice the progress we have made to eradicate child labour and we at GJEPC are actively working to eradicate even the current negligible presence in all gem and jewellery sectors."
