New Delhi , Feb. 17

THE Chief Minister of Delhi, Mrs Sheila Dikshit, on Thursday urged for Asian metro cities network for urban renewal. She was speaking at the inauguration of the bazaar organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI)-Confederation of Asia Pacific Chambers of Commerce and Industry (CACCI) in the Capital.

The four-day bazaar showcases handicrafts, textiles, fashion accessories, jewellery, onyx, marble, home appliances and furniture and other items from over 76 companies from 22 CACCI member countries.

Mrs Dikshit told over 200 foreign delegates participating in the bazaar and conference, that Delhi was fast developing into a technology user-friendly city. She invited IT professionals and experts to create the required infrastructure as the Capital gears to host the Commonwealth Games in 2010. Responding to the observations of FICCI President, Mr Onkar S. Kanwar, and the CACCI President, Mr K.K. Modi, the Chief Minister said Delhi needs infrastructure — monorails, parallel highways, housing, waste and water management technology and projects — and asked the CACCI members to constitute an Asian network of metropolitan cities to focus on the common problems for urban renewal.

The 20th CACCI conference on `Strategies for sustainable growth in the Asia Pacific Region' begins on February 18 with the inauguration by the Minister of State, Prime Minister's Office, Mr Prithviraj Chavan.

The Minister for Commerce and Industry, Mr Kamal Nath, will give away the CACCI local chamber awards.

The conference will deliberate on measures to facilitate trade and investment in Asia Pacific, energy security, strategies for growth of SMEs, and challenges for corporate restructuring.
