Climate & Weather Kerala: `Excess' rain in 8 dists Our Bureau
AN update on rainfall for the season (February 1 to 16) indicates that eight districts of the State continued to receive `excess' rainfall and three others, `normal'. According to the Agromet Bulletin dated February 17 issued by the Met Office, Thiruvananthapuram, two districts recorded `deficient' while Thiruvananthapuram was the lone district to receive `scanty' rain during the period under reference. Season's rainfall (Feb 1 to 16): Excess: Ernakulam, Idukki, Kannur, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur and Wayanad. Normal: Kasaragod, Kollam and Kottayam Deficient: Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta Scanty: Thiruvananthapuram No district, however, recorded any recordable amount of rainfall during the week ended February 16. Mean minimum temperature varied between 19°C and 22°C in various districts. Kottayam recorded the lowest temperature of 16.0°C on Monday. Mean relative humidity varied between 50 per cent and 76 per cent, mean cloud coverage between one okta and five okta and mean wind speed, two kmph and 12 kmph. Forecast valid until the morning of Saturday (February 19) spoke mainly about dry weather for the State. Outlook for the two subsequent days did not indicate any significant change. Stage and state of crops: In the Mundakan paddy crop, harvesting is nearing completion in most of the areas. The late planted to medium duration varieties are in the maturity stage. Transplanting has started in Puncha, the third summer paddy crop. Massive spraying operation is still being carried out against widespread Eriophid mite attack in coconut. Plant protection measures, intercultural operations and shading of young plants are in progress in coconut, arecanut, nutmeg and cardamom. Rooted cuttings are being groomed in pepper. Rubber tapping continued to be hit by winter leaf fall. Monthly top dressing and intercultural operations are in progress in banana, tapioca and vegetables. New planting is being pursued in tapioca and seasonal vegetables. Farm advisory: Paddy fields should be closely watched for sheath blight and sheath rot in the maturity stage. The alert should be extended to the Puncha crop as well as the direct sown fields. Sowing of pulses and vegetables are progressing in rice fallows. The community spraying against mites should be continued with in coconut. Coconut and other garden land crop should be irrigated at least once in every 10-14 days depending on soil and water availability. A third round of control measures against tea mosquitoes can be continued in cashew in consultation with the local Krishi Bhavan. Control measures should also be initiated against stem borer attack in cashew. New planting can be continued in banana, tapioca and seasonal vegetables in areas with assured irrigation source. Based on leaf fall intensity, rubber tapping may be temporarily withheld but may be resumed in intervals of three days. New planting, weeding and fertiliser application may be carried out in rubber. Nursery preparation for coconut, arecanut and pepper may be continued with.
