DEALING with the challenges facing the environment requires a concerted effort by all stakeholders, said Mr R.L. Bhatia, Kerala Governor.

He made this remark while inaugurating the eco meet Prithvi 2005 in the city. Mr Bhatia expressed hope that the event will help fix priorities and programmes required to create a healthy future.

The Kerala Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy, who presided over the inaugural session, said the Kerala Government will accord high priority to ecological considerations when determining the economic policies of the State. Concern about the environment is more than a fad and the State Government is committed to ensuring sustainable growth, he added.

Organised by the Swadeshi Science Movement, the 10-day event will include a series of public lectures, seminars and workshops on promoting eco-friendly technologies in various spheres of life.

An exhibition of eco-friendly products and buyer-seller meetings are also being held as part of the event, which will conclude on February 28.

The Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram, Ms J. Chandra, former Union Minister, Mr O. Rajagopal, and Dr M.G.K. Menon, Chairman, Organising Committee, Prithvi 2005, were among those who participated in the inaugural session.
