`.in' registrations to touch 2 lakh in 6-8 months

Chennai , Feb. 21

WITH increased demand, the `.in' domain name registration could reach two lakh in the next 6-8 months, according to Mr Amitabh Singhal, acting CEO, National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI).

The `.in' domain sign-ups crossed 60,000 within four days of the opening of unrestricted real time registration for public on February 16, and now the number is more than 75,000, he said.

At present, there are 17 accredited `.in' registrars, and expressions of interest have been received from around 250, including 100 from foreign firms.

For the first time, domains are available at the second level such as `name.in'.

Registrations at the third level in the popular zones of domain registration such as `.co.in', `.org.in', `.net.in', `.ind.in', `.firm.in' and `.gen.in' are also available, Mr Singhal said.

The cost of `.in' registration has been reduced by half to around Rs 800, and it just takes a few minutes to register the name online compared to a few days or even months earlier, he said.

According to Mr R. Ramaraj, Managing Director, Sify Ltd, an Internet Service Provider, the `.in' domains would help spread the India brand globally.

"We say we are an information technology superpower. However, our branding is still `.com'.

Also, most of us missed an opportunity to get identities with our name, and `.in' provides this opportunity," he said.
