WITH Indo-European relations poised for a giant leap, an Indo-European Union Parliamentary Forum (IEUPF) is to be launched shortly under the auspices of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
The Chairman of the IEUPF will be Mr Dinesh Trivedi, Member of Parliament, and Mr Robert Kharsing, MP, will be the co-Chairman.
The Executive Committee of the IEUPF will comprise a number of senior and young parliamentarians.
Mr Trivedi told Business Line that the EU is a huge trade block, which acknowledges India as a big market. "We perhaps do not realise how much importance Europe is giving to India," Mr Trivedi, a senior member of the Upper House in the Parliament and who is also on several parliamentary committees, said.
Indo-EU relations are moving into a new era and trade has been the driving force in deepening and strengthening the relationship. This is evident by the fact that the EU is India's largest trading partner, with a steady growth in volume and diversity since 1993. The EU accounts for 26 per cent of India's exports and 25 per cent of imports.
Given these positive developments between the two entities, the formation of the forum comes at a very opportune time, Mr Trivedi said. On the role of FICCI in the IEUPF, he stated that the chamber would play a role of a facilitator by offering its secretariat help in research and infrastructure.
