Little in Budget to cheer small tea growers

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor , March 3

SMALL tea growers in the Nilgiris have expressed their disappointment over the Union Budget.

"There is nothing in the Budget that can answer our woes," Mr M. Bhojarajan, President of the Nilgiris Small Tea Growers Association, told Business Line.

Referring to the abolition of the additional excise duty of a rupee a kg, he said since the levy was borne by the corporate sector only, it would benefit estate factories. Mr Bhojarajan expressed happiness that the Finance Minister had grasped the failure of the Price Stabilisation Scheme as it stood now. "We have been asking for improvements. It is welcome that the Government has appointed an expert committee to go into this as announced by the Finance Minister," he said.

He, however, expressed disappointment that the plea for the formation of a Small Grower Development Authority had not been addressed in the Budget. "This would directly benefit the small growers, and we had made the request based on our first-hand study through the Tea Board in Sri Lanka," said Mr Bhojarajan, who is also a member of the Tea Board.
