New Delhi , March 4

SAMSUNG India is planning to invest about $5 million at its plant in Noida to commence manufacturing of heat exchangers, a key air-conditioner component.

According to Mr Pradeep Tognatta, senior Vice-President, HA - Sales, Samsung India Electronics, the component is at present being imported from Korea. "Manufacturing it locally would help us to save costs. Local production should commence before the next season," he said.

The step would also up the localisation content in Samsung's air conditioners to about 80 per cent from 70 per cent.

Meanwhile, Samsung is considering a price hike on its range of air-conditioners due to pressure from soaring prices of key raw materials such as steel.

"We are studying a price revision at present. Even if we do decide to go in for a price hike, it will only be a marginal one," Mr Ravinder Zutshi, Director - Sales, Samsung India Electronics, said at a conference announcing the introduction of silver nanotechnology in Samsung's home appliances.

The company is keenly watching the implementation of the value-added-tax (VAT) system next month, and is hopeful that it will give a momentum to sales.

Samsung today had announced that its silver nanotechnology would be available in 55 new models across air conditioners, refrigerators and washing machines. The technology prevents bacteria from growing inside appliances and is thus healthier for the consumer, the company said.
