Outlook Industry & Economy - Cosmetics European cosmetic cos eyeing India Our Bureau
Chennai , March 10 EUROPEAN cosmetic and wellness companies are scouting for distributors and joint venture partners to set up third-party manufacture and packaging in India, according to Mr Leon J.A. Van Keeken, Director, International Business, D&A Group, a 60-million-euro company headquartered in Italy. Market research and surveys have indicated that the cosmetic and beauty products market in India is expected to boom in the next five years, he said. Many companies are thinking of relocating their manufacturing to India because of the high cost of manufacture in Europe. Mr Claudio Barbesino, President, Cosmexport, the Italian Cosmetic Industry Promotion Export Consortium, said with increasing costs, many Italian cosmetic majors are manufacturing in Brazil and China. India is likely to be another manufacturing location, he said. Cosmexport, representing eight Italian cosmetic companies such as Sable, AGGF Cosmetic Group Spa, Cosmethic, FARMEN, Farmaceutici Dott. Ciccarelli S.P.A., Bewell SRL, Tocco Magico and HSA-Hair Styling Application, are part of the exhibition on cosmetic and wellness products, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Companies such as Styx Naturcosmetic GmbH from Austria, which manufactures over 300 products for skin and bodycare, and Energist Ltd from the UK, which supplies pulsed light systems for hair removal and skin rejuvenation in the beauty and medical sectors, have participated in the exhibition to open up the Indian subcontinent and set up a distribution network and training partners. Germaine-de-Capuccini, from Spain, which manufactures a range of more than 200 products, including facial and body treatment such as "timexpert" (skincare alternative to micro-injection), "whitencare" for clear, protected and luminous skin, is looking for a distributor of its products. The domestic participation has come from the Apollo Group, Sami Labs, Godrej Consumer Products and a number of fitness equipment manufacturers. Company representatives said the main idea is to create awareness among the public on the need for wellness and about the growing beauty industry.
