Gujarat flags off bio-diesel buses

Gandhinagar , March 13

CLOSE on the heels of launching buses running on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Gujarat has became the first State in the country to start a commercial service of buses that run on bio-diesel.

Four buses running on bio-diesel were flagged off at a ceremony in the State Capital by the Union Petroleum and Panchayati Raj Minister, Mr Mani Shankar Aiyar, on Saturday.

"Trial runs had been carried out in Haryana and Maharashtra. Even the Indian Railways had run a Jan Shatabdi on bio-diesel. But this is the first time that a regular commercial service is being started with bio-diesel," the Gujarat Chief Minister, Mr Narendra Modi, said.

The Faridabad-based Research and Development lab of Indian Oil Corporation has tested jatropha oil and found that it could be safely mixed with diesel.

"Scientists tell us that we can mix up to 20 per cent jatropha oil in diesel. We have made a beginning today with a 5 per cent mix. But we are willing to take the risk and mix more oil in the bio-diesel used by our buses than the current level," Mr Modi said.

Mr Aiyar said that the private sector would have to address the critical issue of cost of jatropha oil. That, he said, would be possible only if the private companies involved in extraction encourage village panchayats to cultivate jatropha on unproductive land.

The bio-diesel to Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation is being supplied by Gujarat Oleo Chem Ltd, which has set up a bio-diesel blending and extraction plant in South Gujarat.

The company would mix 5 per cent jatropha oil with diesel supplied by Indian Oil Corporation and supply the same to the State Transport Corporation, Gujarat Oleo Chem Executive Director, Mr Sandeep Chaturvedi, told Business Line.
