Gale hits plantain crops

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: Hundreds of acres of plantain crop were destroyed due to a sudden gale in the Manachanallur block on Sunday night in Tiruchi district.

Several varieties of the plantain crop such as Nendran, Poovan, Mondan and Elasi have been completely damaged, in which farmers have invested between Rs 20,000 and Rs 25,000 per acre. About 15 villages are said to have been affected.

According to a disappointed banana farmer, this is when the farmers were anticipating a bumper harvest, following timely discharge of water from Mettur dam.
