Monorail system mooted for Hyderabad

Hyderabad , March 21

METRAIL India Pvt Ltd (MIPL), the Indian subsidiary of Malaysian major MMC Metrail Sdn Bhd, and a member of the Anglo Swiss Consortium, has proposed a hybrid monorail system for Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

The Anglo Swiss Consortium consists of the UK-based Frazer Nash, Metrail AG of Switzerland, Malaysia-based MMC Metrail Sdn Bhd and Sundaram Architects Pvt Ltd.

Addressing presspersons after making a presentation to the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, here on Monday, the MIPL Chairman, Mr Zafar Saifullah, said the monorail would introduce a complete new technology compared to the existing and future rail projects in the country.

If approved by the Andhra Pradesh Government, Metrail proposes to complete the initial investigation in six months and make operational the first phase of 49 kilometres monorail system covering 38 stations by December next year.

In the second phase, the company proposes to add a further 150 km to cover the remaining busy routes of the twin cities, he said.

Apart from the fact that the growing population with consequent travel demand has been resulting in alarming proportion of vehicle population, it was becoming highly difficult to accommodate the growing vehicle population in the city.

"This prompts to work out some alternative ways of meeting the increasing transport demand given the constraints of land, capital and the need to control energy consumption and the pollution. Mass rapid transportation system can relieve burden over roads," Mr Saifullah said.
