Bought-leaf factories perform better

P.S. Sundar

COONOOR: Fifty-five small scale factories in the Nilgiris, popularly called bought-leaf factories, fetched an average price of at least Rs 10 per kg more than the district average price of Rs 41.55 per kg at the auctions conducted by the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) in 2004.

According to the Tea Board sources, this was possible as the factories procured only quality green leaves from farmers to process.

The factories paid Rs 9.50-Rs 12 a kg for the green leaves.

Darmona Estate got the highest average price of Rs 74.96 a kg, selling 63,144 kg. Sri Sakthi Supreme came second with Rs 69.20, but it sold only 2,124 kg. Hittakkal Estate sold 65,007 kg and got a high average of Rs 64.22, while Vigneshwar Estate fetched Rs 63.33 for its huge volume of 1.34 lakh kg. Highfield estate came close with Rs 63.31 for its 1.03 lakh kg.
