Vessel collides with barge at Panaji port

Our Bureau

Mumbai , March 23

A SINGAPORE-registered bulk carrier, MV Maritime Wisdom, was involved in a collision with a barge while loading at Panaji port anchorage area on Wednesday, resulting in some oil spillage.

According to reports, about 110 tonnes of fuel oil from the vessel spilled into the sea. The accident occurred in the early hours, when the barge, Parpti, while casting off, collided with the vessel, puncturing her fuel oil tank.

Confirming the accident, a senior official of the Directorate General of Shipping said the situation was being closely monitored. He said the oil leakage has been controlled and stopped by the vessel within a couple of hours of the accident by transferring the oil from the leaking tank.

Further, the Marmagao port has deployed oil skimmers along with a dumb barge for collecting the recovered oil. A port tug has also been mobilised for spraying oil-spill dispersant, with the Coast Guard also mobilising a Dornier aircraft for spraying the dispersant.
