Sugar Nurturing hope A. Roy Chowdhury
A farmer examining his sugarcane crop in Aligarh in Andhra Pradesh's Medak district. Farmers have begun to show interest in growing sugarcane this year as sugar prices have sky-rocketed on lower production and higher demand. Production was hit last year due to drought in States such as Maharashtra and Karnataka. This year, sugarcane production has increased marginally to 237.67 lakh tonnes from last year's 234.31 lakh tonnes.
