Retailing SPAR Intl's coop retail outlet in Juhu Our Bureau
Mumbai , March 24 RADHAKRISHNA Foodland has become a licensee of SPAR International and has set up its first co-operative retail outlet in Mumbai's Juhu area. The co-operative model, promoted by SPAR International, has retailers and wholesalers working together to improve efficiencies and business. The model, which was started in 1932 by Adriaan Van Well, has, according to Mr Gordon Campbell, Managing Director, SPAR International, achieved a fair measure of success in Europe, Africa and Asia. Spar will give Radhakrishna Foodland the expertise to bring it on a par with global standard. The `SPAR' advantage would mean that better deals could be negotiated with suppliers and these could be passed on to independent retailers. According to Mr Raju Shete, Chairman and Managing Director, Radhakrishna Foodland Pvt Ltd, the segment would witness a number of challenges, mainly on front- and back-end operations. According to Mr Shete, the company has invested Rs 60 crore in setting up a food distribution centre in Kalamboli in Thane, Maharashtra. He added that there would be testing facilities at the centre and that it had a strategic agreement with Standards Australia International to monitor the supply chain. He added by the year-end, hopefully there would be six more retail partners under the SPAR model. SPAR International accounts for 30 per cent of the Austrian retail business and has 2,000 retail stores in Germany. Worldwide there are about 15,000 super markets and its retail sales worldwide for 2004-05 will touch Euro 27 billion.
