Hyderabad , March 24

THE State Revenue Minister, Mr D. Prasada Rao, today said that an extent of over 761 acres of land worth Rs 89.71 crore was encroached upon by some influential local leaders in Tirupati since 1985.

Replying to a question raised Mr Y. Ramakrishnudu, (TDP), in the Assembly, Mr Rao said after the Congress came to power last year various steps were taken to evict the encroachers.

Senior advocates were engaged to fight the land grabbing cases in courts.

Expressing dissatisfaction over the Minister's reply, the opposition Telugu Desam Party staged a walkout.

It protested the State Government's alleged failure to check encroachment of Government lands in and around the temple town of Tirupati.

The TDP members, who raised the issue during question hour, also demanded a judicial probe.
