`Handloom weavers need social security schemes'

Our Correspondent

Madurai , March 25

THE handloom weavers in Madurai district are not able to derive the benefit of any social security schemes of the Government, according to union sources.

Though the district has a sizeable number of weavers who work hard for more then 10 hours a day but earn only a pittance, they are not enrolled under the Employees State Insurance Scheme or the Employees Provident Fund Scheme or any of the insurance schemes, despite repeated pleas and agitations.

According to Mr D.S. Sudharsan, District Secretary of the Handloom Common Labours Union, which is affiliated to the Indian National Trade Union Congress, unless measurers are initiated to bring them under the insurance scheme, their families would languish in poverty.

A memorandum highlighting their plight has been submitted to the District Collector, he added.
