Agricultural Policy TN proposes hike in minimum wages for farm labour Our Bureau
Chennai , March 28 THE Tamil Nadu Government has proposed a hike in minimum wages for farm labour for which it will come out with a preliminary notification. The final notification is expected in June after the mandatory two-month period to consider objections and suggestions. In an announcement in the Assembly today, the Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, said that the preliminary notification would come out immediately. The daily wages of a farm worker with own plough and bullocks would be fixed at Rs 150 against the prevailing rate of Rs 100. If the farmer provides the plough and bullocks, the labourer would be paid Rs 80 instead of Rs 54 now. Regarding minimum daily wages for paddy harvesting up to bagging the paddy, the wage for men stands hiked to Rs 80 for eight hours' work against the current level of Rs 54, while women will be paid Rs 70 for five hours' work against the prevailing Rs 45. If the payment is to be in kind, one-eighth of the output will have to be paid as wages, whichever is higher. Labourers involved in harvesting crops other than paddy will also be paid the same wages. For seeding, transplanting and weeding operations, men will be paid minimum wages of Rs 80 against Rs 54 for six hours and women Rs 70 against Rs 45 for five hours. This also applies to workers involved in field preparation, bee keeping, poultry and dairy farms. Farmers should not deduct the cost of food supplied to the workers.
