New strains

A scientist of the International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (Icrisat) inspecting transgenic chickpea plants in a glasshouse. Icrisat is using transgenic technology to come out with chickpea and groundnut varieties that can withstand drought. These varieties are now being tested under artificial conditions. The research is being implemented in collaboration with scientists from the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences. It will take some more time and several levels of testing before it reaches the farmers' field.
