New Delhi , April 6 NOKIA'S announcement to set up manufacturing base in the country does not come as a surprise, with the Finnish company having garnered more than 72 per cent of the GSM mobile handset sales in February. According to a survey conducted by ORG-GFK across 10 cities, Nokia bettered its performance in January when it had got 67 per cent of the market share. Korean major Samsung sold the second largest number of mobile handsets cornering 9.4 per cent of the sales in February. This, however, is lower than the company's share in January when it had got 13.4 per cent of the units sold. The third rank is taken by Sony-Ericsson with just over 7 per cent market share followed by Motorola with 4 per cent of the units sold. Overall, 4.98-lakh handsets were sold in the top 10 mobile markets by 11 vendors during February compared to 4.99 lakh in the previous month. In the colour phone segment, Nokia cornered 52 per cent of the sales while Samsung got 19 per cent of the share. In January, Samsung had 27 per cent of the market share while nearly 44 per cent of the units sold were from Nokia. Sony-Ericsson had 16 per cent of the colour phone sales while LG's share was 5.5 per cent. And Motorola with a 3 per cent share is ranked fifth in this segment. In the monochrome segment, again Nokia tops the chart with 87 per cent of the units sold. Motorola with 6.2 per cent share is the second in this segment. While 2.9 lakh monochrome handsets were sold in February across the 10 cities, colour phones accounted for just over 2 lakh handsets.
