Rs 11 cr for Kerala biotech incubator project

THE Centre has sanctioned Rs 11 crore for the establishment of a biotechnology incubator at the biotechnology park being set up in Kochi by Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation.

According to a company spokesperson, the biotechnology incubation centre will form the first phase of the establishment of the biotechnology park. The incubation centre will cover an area of 1,000 square feet and will have 10 workspaces for biotechnology entrepreneurs.

The centre will function as an autonomous society formed jointly by the Department of Biotechnology - Government of India, the Government of Kerala and Kinfra. The investment in the incubation centre is expected to be Rs 23 crore, the spokesperson said.

Of this, the Centre will contribute Rs 11 crore and the State the remaining amount. A committee of experts constituted by the Department of Biotechnology will monitor the implementation of the project, the spokesperson added. The total investment in the proposed park in Kochi is expected to be Rs 39 crore.
