Mumbai , April 8

GEO TV, the flagship channel of the Pakistan-based Jung Group, may be launched in India.

The Dubai-based channel is currently studying the Indian market to make an assessment of the viability of launching a channel here, senior officials said. While Geo TV wants to share in the growing broadcasting industry here it is cognisant of the fact that there are far too many channels and the distribution hitches are yet to be completely sorted out.

Geo TV is a general entertainment channel with a combination of news, serials and live shows. Geo TV officials said in the event the channel is launched in India the programming would be altered to suit the Indian audiences.

Having launched in Pakistan, Geo TV has expanded its operations in West Asia, Canada, the US and the UK. It also plans to launch 10 channels under the mother brand of Geo TV. The Pakistan Government is close to granting a DTH licence to Geo TV, Mr Shakeel-ur-Rehman, Chairman, Jang Group, had announced recently.

Geo TV is one of the 15 private channels operating in Pakistan today. Another 10 are likely to join the fray, Mr Rehman said. Additionally, there are 24 FM stations.
