`Indian entrepreneurs more confident now'

Bangalore , April 10

INFOSYS Technologies CEO, President and Managing Director, Mr Nandan Nilekani, has said that Indian entrepreneurs are now more confident to compete globally than ever before.

Participating in a panel discussion on Indian competitiveness on the occasion of the release of a book by Mr Subir Roy, the associate editor of Business Standard, South called, `Made in India,' a study of emerging competitiveness, Mr Nilekani said Indian companies have acquired requisite skills to compete with the best in the world. "But however big you become, you are limited by the quality of public service and public infrastructure," he said. Hence infrastructure too should keep pace with the growth of the companies. He said the book was an excellent study about the evolution of Indian companies into globally competitive entities.

Mr Roy said the book sought to identify the issues and reasons why certain trends emerged and developments took place in Indian competitiveness. The book points out that Indian companies cannot continue to remain competitive purely on cost as sooner or later, newer, lower cost competitors emerge.

ABB's Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Ravi Uppal, said the country should focus more on the manufacturing sector as developed countries had been built on the success of the manufacturing sector. Mr Gurucharan, an IAS Officer, said the book emphasise that while Indian companies are competitive, the Indian economy is far from being competitive.
