THE Tamil Nadu Government today signed an agreement with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority to set up a cashew export zone in Cuddalore district at a cost of Rs 10.36 crore.

According to a State Government release, Tamil Nadu is a leading grower of cashew nuts. About 95,500 hectares of land are under cashew cultivation and the State produces about 40,000 tonnes of cashew nuts a year.

It exports about 2,200 tonnes of cashew valued at about Rs 50 crore from the districts of Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Perambalur, Pudukottai and Sivaganga to Singapore, Malaysia, the US and Europe.

The proposed cashew export zone will be established with private sector participation and it is expected to increase cashew exports to Rs 100 crore in three years, according to the release.
