THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Amrita Television has gone on air at an elaborate function held here on Thursday that saw many leading names from the film, music and entertainment industry and the world of letters in attendance.

Trooping down the stage to light the ceremonial lamp were danseuse Sonal Mansingh; music director and singer Bhupen Hazarika; film producer Ramesh Sippy; French documentary maker Manuel de la Rouges; Malayalam actors Mammootty and Mohanlal; and Swami Amrita Swaroopananda Puri of the Amritanandamayi Mutt. The channel logo was unveiled on the occasion.

The function also saw the first Amrita Film Fraternity awards being given away. The Trivandrum Film Fraternity in association with Amrita Television have instituted these awards.
