Telecommunications Reliance Mobile services enter 2nd phase expansion in Karnataka Our Bureau
Mangalore , April 15 THE second phase expansion of Reliance India Mobile (RIM) services in Karnataka will cover 5,860 villages and 300 towns catering to the needs of nearly two crore people. Addressing newspersons here on Friday, Mr Viney Singh, Chief Executive Officer, Reliance Infocomm Ltd, Karnataka Circle, said 200 towns have already been covered under the second phase expansion plan. The rest will be covered soon. Most of these towns are from the Konkan region in the State. Under the second phase, 764 BTS (base transceiver station) towers have been planned in the State. Of them, 398 have already been established. In the first phase of its expansion, the company covered 47 towns till December 2004. Asked about the third phase expansion plans, he said that an announcement will be made in this regard soon. Highlighting the importance of rural telephony in the country, Mr Singh said that Reliance Infocomm has embarked on an expansion plan to reach out four lakh villages by the year-end. This will cover nearly two-thirds of villages and over 5,700 cities and towns. The expansion, involving 8,500 BTS towers, will cover 91 per cent of the country's national highways and 85 per cent of the rail lines. Ms Rajeshwari, Chief Technology Officer, Reliance Infocomm, Karnataka Circle, said that the company has laid 4,000 km of terabit optic fibre cable network in the State. This will help in providing uninterrupted and unlimited voice, data and video applications.
