THE Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham) on Tuesday suggested nine trading areas for the proposed Indo-Pak Joint Business Council to explore setting up joint ventures and providing the legal framework for furthering closer links between both nations.
These nine areas include the cotton industry, engineering products, leather, food processing, fisheries, educational institutes, services, information exchange and tourism.
"In order to curb the growing unauthorised trade between both the countries, setting up joint ventures in these nine sectors will not only lead to betterment of our socio-political relationship with Pakistan but also result in increased bilateral trade," the Assocham President, Mr Mahendra K. Sanghi, said in a release.
The bilateral trade between India and Pakistan could touch $10 billion by 2010, provided the right initiatives are taken by the two governments, he said.
There was enough scope for the private sector of both the countries to make the required level of investment for modernisation and technological advancements, he added.
