Rlys earns Rs 13,105 cr from coal transport

DRIVEN by revenues of Rs 13,104.79 crore from the transport of coal to steel plants, thermal powerhouses, washeries and other users, Indian Railways registered freight earnings of Rs 30,844.13 crore in fiscal 2004-05.

Freight earnings from coal went up by 12.52 per cent on a year-on-year basis, while the total freight earnings went up by 12.56 per cent.

In terms of tonnage, the Railways carried 271.06 million tonnes (mt) of coal, registering a 7.71 per cent increase over last year.

From the total earnings accruing from coal, transport of coal to steel plants, washeries and thermal powerhouses accounted for Rs 884.3 crore, Rs 16.41 crore and Rs 10,206.68 crore, respectively.

The Railways earned Rs 1,275.23 crore (up 11.92 per cent) and Rs 1,520.51 crore (up 9.37 per cent), respectively by transporting 44.11 mt of raw materials and 14.86 mt of iron and steel to steel plants during the year.

By transporting 36.33 mt of iron ore for exports, it registered a 52.6 per cent growth in earnings over the fiscal 2003-04, touching Rs 1,468.98 crore in 2004-05.

Revenue accruals from cement transport (54.23 mt) also grew by 13.86 per cent to touch Rs 2,487.96 crore, whereas earnings from foodgrains dipped marginally by 1.44 per cent to Rs 3,146.2 crore.

The Railways earned Rs 1,296.5 crore by transporting 28.36 mt of fertilisers in 2004-05. Revenues from the transport of petroleum, oil and lubricants (POL) went up by 13.69 per cent to touch Rs 2,760.73 crore, even though the tonnage of POL at 32.4 mt was only 1.19 per cent higher than last year.

Earnings from the transport of other goods recorded a 15.82 per cent growth, touching Rs 3,783.23 crore.
