Dairy & Dairy Products Marketing - Standards & Benchmarks Pawar calls for global standards in milk processing Our Bureau
New Delhi , April 21 THE Union Minister for Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Minister, Mr Sharad Pawar, has called for adoption of international standards for production and processing of milk. In World Trade Organisation regime, international trade is in a frame of quality standards, Mr Pawar said while addressing the Parliamentary Consultative Committee attached to his Ministry, here today. The Minister said that some States are still running milk co-operatives against the spirit of co-operative movement, adding that he highly regarded the Operation Flood project that had benefited 10 million families from 1970. The Constitutional Amendment in Cooperatives Act, which was in pipeline, to facilitate smooth and efficient running of societies would benefit milk farmers financially better, he said. Additionally, the Consultative Committee members said there is a great need for policy shift towards safeguarding the community grazing lands in the villages, which directly affect the dairy development in rural areas. Regularisation of slaughterhouses and venture capital fund needs to be doubled to strengthen the dairy sector, according to an official statement.
