Malaysia frees detained HCL Tech employees

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI: The Malaysian authorities have released two Indian software engineers working with HCL Technologies, according to a top company official. The two were detained last week on suspicion of being illegal immigrants, despite having valid visas.

"Both the employees have been released. One was released on Sunday and another on Monday. They were detained for not possessing documents when they were asked for it. However, both have legal documents," Mr Saurav Adhikari, Corporate Vice President (Strategy), HCL Technologies, told Business Line here.

He said one of the employees had a long-term employment permit, while the other had a business visa. "The two employees were released after the Indian High Commission intervened, and both are now back at work," he said.

The employees of HCL Technologies had been arrested on Saturday evening while eating at a food stall in Kuala Lumpur. Members of RELA, a voluntary paramilitary force that helps authorities in a continuing crack-down on illegal workers, took the men to a detention camp for illegal migrants because they did not have their passports with them.

HCL Technologies currently has over a dozen clients in Malaysia and implements projects ranging from Enterprise Resource Planning to application work. "We also run a technical helpdesk for Microsoft," Mr Adhikari said, adding the company has 100 employees in Malaysia.
