Strategy Philips to come out with energy efficient products Our Bureau
Chennai , May 12 PHILIPS India Ltd, known popularly for its radios and light bulbs, is positioning itself as a healthcare, technology and lifestyle company. The company has interests in software, consumer electronics, appliances and semi-conductors. Mr K. Ramachandran, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, said that the company was moving forward in these areas with set goals. Elaborating on some of the plans, he said the company is coming out with energy efficient products such as the compact fluorescent lamps for the market in India. In the rural areas, alternative sources of energy such as solar and biogas for lighting would be the answer, he said. Electronically controlled lighting, which caters to moods and provides a better ambience, is also on the cards. The company grew by 40 per cent in the consumer electronics segment, which would be the main driver of growth, he said. Philips is focusing on the concept of `flat slim wide', televisions like the recently launched Ambi light- a lifestyle product. Mr Ramachandran said Philips has plans to enter the water business to provide drinking water as the company has the UV technology, which is widely used for water treatment. The project would be announced some time later. The company will invest Rs 90 crore in its marketing and advertising campaign this fiscal, Mr Ramachandran said. The company plans to increase its head count at the Global Share Service in Chennai, which offers financial and accounting services to Philips in North America, from 185 to 400 in 2007. At the research and development centre in Bangalore, the head count is expected to go 2,500 from 1,500 now, he said. Over the past four years, the seven entities of Philips in India have been merged. The mergers of three companies await statutory approval after which the company will be called Philips Electronics India Ltd, Mr Ramachandran said. He said that last year was one of the best for the company when it grew by over 30 per cent. The company's turnover registered Rs 2,700 crore in 2004. The contribution from software was Rs 250 crore to Rs 275 crore, medical operations Rs 200 crore to Rs 250 crore and the others such as lighting, medical, appliances, semiconductors contributed Rs 2,200 crore.
