IL&FS, McKinsey to draw Jharkhand minerals, farm sector roadmap

Jamshedpur , May 13

JHARKHAND has engaged consultants to prepare a long-term roadmap for the development of mineral-based industries and the agriculture sector in the State and for preparing the outline for an international airport, according to Mr Arjun Munda, Chief Minister of Jharkhand.

Speaking to presspersons here, Mr Munda said the Government has appointed IL&FS and McKinsey towards this end.

The consultants have been asked to prepare a roadmap for facilitating marketing of the State's agro-produce.

Jharkhand was also focused on channelising water and water harvesting with a view to meeting the needs of industry and agriculture.

Talks have also been initiated with stakeholders for the setting up a second steel township in the State.

He said Jharkhand has 37 per cent of the country's mineral reserves and, as such, it was but natural that the State had emerged as a preferred investment destination for mineral-based industries.

On its part, the Government would encourage and facilitate investment that would, in the long term, benefit the State and its people and help in the economic uplift of 54 per cent of the State's population, which currently lives below the poverty line.

"Our State has suffered enough loot. We are in our right senses now. We shall allow our mineral reserves to be exploited only by those who will help maximise benefits to the State and the people here," he said, adding that preference would, naturally, be given to long-term players.

Asked about the new-found investment interest of the L.N. Mittal Group in the steel sector in the State, Mr Munda said only preliminary enquiries have been made and a firm proposal in this regard was yet to come from the Group.
