3G services are expected to facilitate higher speed and data throughput, which enable delivery of a wide range of multimedia services, including video telephony and television.

3G, according to the telecom industry, represents true convergence of fixed and mobile telephony.

According to the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), wireless operators are on a national footprint expansion mode, using 2G (second generation) and 2.5G technologies.

3G allows telecom operators to offer new services such as music downloads, low-cost voice calls and wireless broadband access to laptops.

In India, 3G technology can play a dual role. In urban India, there is a spectrum crunch and 3G can treble voice capacity and solve the spectrum issue. In rural India, 3G will be a boon for e-governance, according to the COAI.
