Web site defacements tad up in April

Moumita Bakshi

New Delhi , May 15

AS many as 70 incidents of Indian Web site defacement were reported in popular domains including `.com' and `.org' in April compared to 67 reported in the previous month, according to data compiled by Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (Cert-in).

According to the statistics by Cert-in, the bulk of defacements occurred in `.com' domain. Against 32 defacements reported in March, about 43 incidents were reported in April.

A total of 18 defacement cases were witnessed in `.co.in', `.gov.in', and `.org' domains during the period in reference, while the rest were reported in `.net', `.ac.in', `.biz' and `.info' Web sites.

There were no reports of defacement in `.edu', `.in' and `.name' domains during April.

The number of Indian Web site defacements recorded in April and March this year is significantly lower compared to the first two months of 2005.

As many as 798 cases of Web site hacking were tracked by Cert-in in January this year — the highest since June 2004. The sharp rise was primarily on account of mass defacement attempts detected on January 2, January 12, January 19, which accounted for 699 site defacements. In February, this number came down to 218.

In contrast, the number of defacements in December 2004 stood at a mere 49, which had included 21 `.com' Web sites, eight `.co.in' sites and five `.ac.in' sites, besides some in `.gov.in' and `.org.in' domains.

CERT-in, constituted in January 2004 to tackle any possible hacking or virus attacks on the information systems including vital networks such as power, railways, aviation and Defence, provides reactive and proactive services to enhance cyber security.
