Monsoon caravan set rolling: IMD

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram , May 16

THE cross-equatorial flow, which brings in the moisture-carrying winds from the Indian Ocean over the southwest peninsula, has been set into motion, signalling the go-ahead for the monsoon 2005 caravan.

This more or less makes for conditions that are widely believed to lead to the onset of the seasonal weather phenomenon over the country's southwest coast, said Mr M. D. Ramachandran, Director, Met Office, Thiruvananthapuram.

But, this has ironically coincided with a severe heat wave that is currently sweeping parts of Central India and the peninsula, which is at variance with weather conditions known to prevail at this time of the year.

According to Mr Ramachandran, the extreme heat could be traced to the complete absence of atmospheric disturbances in the northern hemisphere in recent times. Even Pacific Ocean, which witnessed a procession of storms during this time last year, is no exception to this trend. The same holds true for the Bay of Bengal, areas over which usually spur into action by this time.

Mr Ramachandran would not hazard a guess on how this would tell, if at all, on the conduct of the approaching monsoon currents.

The oppressive weather conditions are expected to continue for the next two days as well. Chennai saw mercury breaching the 40 degree Celsius barrier on Tuesday last.

The trough of low pressure over the Andaman Sea persisted as of Monday. Under its influence, rain/thundershowers have been forecast at a few places over Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Kerala weather: Rain or thundershowers occurred at a few places in the State during the four days ended Sunday.

Chief amounts of rainfall in cm are:

May 12: Kollam and Parambikkulam - 2 each; and Cherthala, Mancompu, Haripad, Devikolam, Kumarakom and Thiruvalla - 1 each.

May 13: Karipur Airport and Enamackel - 3 each; and Pattambi, Kollengode, Ottapalam, Alathur, Devikolam, Thodupuzha, Kannara, Thiruvalla and Konni - 2 each.

May 14: Devikolam - 1.

May 15: Cherthala and Kochi Airport - 3 each; and Aluva, Piravom, Perumbavur, Munnar and Ponnani - 1 each.

Mean maximum temperature varied between 33 deg C and 35 deg C in various districts. Kannur recorded the maximum of 36.9 deg C on Thursday.

Mean relative humidity varied between 62 per cent and 83 per cent, mean cloud coverage between 5 okta and 7 okta and mean wind speed, 2 kmph and 10 kmph.

Forecast valid until the morning of Wednesday spoke about the possibility of rain/thundershowers at a few places in the State. Outlook for the two subsequent days did not indicate any significant change.
