Chennai , May 25

TEXPORT Electronics Ltd of Kolkata on Wednesday launched its Avi brand of air-conditioners in Tamil Nadu.

These air-conditioners, which have either Hitachi or Mitsubishi rotary compressors, have been designed by Basile of Italy and are produced by Texport in China.

Texport Electronics intends to assemble the AC machines in India, once the company is able to reach sales of 35,000 pieces a year.

The assembly plant will come up in the Falta Special Economic Zone, near Kolkata, at an investment of about Rs 1 crore, the Texport Managing Director, Major Raj Sahai, told journalists here.

He said the company would reach that level of sales by February next year, by which time the company's turnover would be about Rs 40 crore.

Texport is 50 per cent-owned by Sangam Swiss SA of Switzerland, a company owned by non-residents Indian (NRIs).

Sangam markets Texport's products in Europe, under the brand name Conte Aviral. It is available in ranges such as window, split, floor standing, ceiling cassette, duct and portable.

The capacities vary from 0.65 tonnes to 3.5 tonnes (for duct type it extends to 17 tonnes).

Designed for the trendy and environment conscious consumer, the price ranges from Rs 8,500 (for 0.65 tonnes) to Rs 25,000 (ceiling cassette type of 3.5 tonnes).

It has features such as nano filters, cold catalyst technology and independent de-humidification and uses Hitachi, Sanyo and Mitsubishi compressors. A warranty of five years is given for the products.

The Rs 1,820-crore AC market is expected to grow by 20 per cent.

Major Sahai said, over a period of time, Texport would bring in a range of consumer electronic products - LCD/plasma TVs, MP3 players, digital cameras and portable DVD players into the Indian market.
