12 killed in cement factory roof collapse

Chennai , May 28

TWELVE construction workers were killed and several injured when the scaffolding collapsed at a construction site at Dalmia Cement's factory in Dalmiapuram, near Tiruchi, according to a press release from the company.

Quoting an eyewitness, the release said the accident occurred around 1.30 p.m. when the scaffolding collapsed.

A contractor based in Erode was carrying out the construction work, the release said.

An expert committee is being constituted to study the cause of the accident. The company has announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the families of the dead and Rs 25,000 to the injured, who will also be provided medical assistance and rehabilitation, the release said.

The Tamil Nadu Government has announced a compensation of Rs 50,000 from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to the families of those killed in the accident.

According to the release, 21 people were injured in the accident. The seriously injured would be paid a compensation of Rs 15,000 and the rest Rs 6,000.
