Climate & Weather Heavy rains forecast in Kerala Our Bureau
HEAVY to very heavy rainfall has been forecast for Kerala and Lakshadweep over the 48 hours ending Wednesday as pre-monsoon rain activity peaked in the State. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) refrained from announcing `further advance' of the southwest monsoon into the Bay of Bengal relative to its position on Sunday. "We will probably do it on Tuesday," said Dr M. Rajeevan, Director-Forecasting. A lot of pre-monsoon showers are happening on the peninsula as of now. But these should subside in a couple of days, he added. According to the Met Department, Thiruvananthapuram, rain/thundershowers occurred at most places in Lakshadweep and many places in Kerala during the 24 hours ending Monday morning. Heavy to very heavy rain was recorded at the following places (in cm): Neyyattinkara - 19; Nedumangadu - 16; Thiruvananthapuram City and Airport - 11 each; Alappuzha - 9; Varkala - 7; Kozhikode, Kottayam and Kollam - 6 each; and Cherthala and Kunnamkulam - 5 each. The Agromet Bulletin dated May 30 issued by the Met Office said rain/thundershowers occurred at most places in the State on May 27, a few places on May 26 and 29, and at isolated places on May 28. Chief amounts of rainfall in cm are (May 26 to 29): May 26: Thodupuzha - 10; Kottayam and Thalassery - 3 each; and Kanjirappally, Cherthala and Haripad - 2 each. May 27: Mancompu and Cherthala - 11 each; Kumarakom, Aryankavu and Thodupuzha - 10 each; Ponnani, Thiruvalla and Thrissur - 7 each; Kunnamkulam, Chalakkudy, Kannara, Piravom, Paravur, Mavelikara, Chengannur and Cochin International Airport - 6 each; Kochi Airport, Aluva, Kozhikode, Perumbavur, Idukki, Kozha and Ottapalam - 5 each. May 28: Kunnamkulam - 2; and Kozhikode - 1. May 29: Cochin International Airport - 3; Alappuzha and Kottayam - 2 each; and Punalur and Aluva - 1 each. Mean maximum temperature varied between 31°C and 33°C in various districts of the State. Kannur recorded the highest maximum of 35.8° C on May 26. The maximum temperature was 4° C above normal in Alappuzha and Kozhikode districts on May 26 and by 3° C on May 29. Mean relative humidity varied between 65 per cent and 91 per cent, mean cloud coverage between 5 okta and 7 okta and mean wind speed, 2 kmph and 8 kmph. Stage and state of crops: The Virippu paddy crop is in the tillering stage in the direct sown crop. In coconut gardens, intercultural operations with arecanut, plant protection measures, harvesting and processing are proceeding. New planting is proceeding apace in rubber and coconut plantations. Top dressing, weeding, plant protection and harvesting, new planting and intercultural operations are being carried out in banana and tapioca as well. Harvesting operations continue in fruit crops also.
