MEMBERS of the Bharathiya Janata Party (BJP) — led by the Member of Parliament of Mangalore, Mr Sadananda Gowda - staged a `rail roko' agitation here on Monday.

They stopped the Mangalore-Chennai Mail at the Mangalore railway station for an hour. They were demanding a train service between Mangalore and Subrahmanya Road on Hassan-Mangalore railway line. They also urged the Government to complete gauge conversion work between Subrahmanya Road and Sakleshpur on Hassan-Mangalore railway line.

The Chief Engineer of Palghat Division, Southern Railway, who came to the spot, explained the steps taken by the Railways on their demands.

Later, in an informal chat with newspersons, Mr Gowda said that the General Manager of Palghat Division, Southern Railway, who had spoken to him over phone, had told him that a passenger train would be introduced between Mangalore and Subrahmanya Road by June 10.

The official had also assured him that work between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya Road on Hassan-Mangalore railway line would be completed by June 30.

Stating that the Railway Consultative Committee has agreed to change the name of Kankanady Railway Station in Mangalore as Mangalore Junction, he said the committee has also agreed to rename the main railway station as Mangalore Central.
