Shell India may tie up with more local suppliers

Chennai , June 6

OIL major Royal Dutch/Shell, which sources petrol and diesel solely from Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd for its retail operations, said on Monday that it might have to tie up with more Indian suppliers as it expands.

Shell India's retail outlets — two in Bangalore and one in Chennai — are fed with MRPL's products.

The company has alliances with refineries in Singapore and Malaysia, among others, but prefers to source fuel from within the country, said Mr Shairan Huzani Husain, Managing Director, Shell India Marketing Pvt Ltd.

"It makes commercial sense for us to source products locally. As and when we see the need to import different type of fuels, we would do that."

He didn't reveal whether Shell is able to cover costs, given its single point of procurement, ownership of pumps and a slew of newer features in its outlets that it says will improve environmental safety and operational efficiency.

One such feature is the use of double-walled tanks, which Shell has used in place of steel tanks.

The former, now being made by a vendor in Goa to the company's specifications, is environment-friendly, as it prevents leakages, unlike steel tanks, the company said.

Mr Husain also denied that the company has slowed down its rollout plans.

"I don't believe we are slowing down. We have aggressive targets. A lot of what we do now isn't visible," he said, adding that Shell has opened three outlets within a year of being given permission.

The Government has permitted Shell to open 2,000 petrol stations in the country.

Mr Husain refused to divulge information on Shell's rollout plan.
