Trade & Labour Unions Kerala: Transport workers' strike put off Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , June 12 THE proposed indefinite strike by transport workers in the State from June 13 has been postponed. The decision to this effect was taken after discussions between the Joint Action Council of Transport Workers' Unions and the Labour Minister, Mr Babu Divakaran, here. The unions, cutting across party lines, had called the strike to press, among others things, for a comprehensive transport policy for the State. The Convener of the Joint Action Council, Mr Elamaram Kareem, said the Government had responded favourably to most of the workers' demands and also promised to hold a tripartite meeting next month to look into the question of wage revision in the industry by amending the Fair Wages Act. He said that the Government had assured the council that a committee would be constituted to study the condition of the road transport industry in the State. The Minister said at the meeting that talks would be held with the unions on further amending the provisions of the Kerala Motor Transport Workers' Welfare Fund Act, which had already been once amended through an ordinance. The proposed discussions would focus on how to improve the operation of the scheme. The Minister also assured the meeting that the Government would not make digital meters mandatory for autorickshaws operating in panchayat areas.
