A PETITION has been submitted to the Tirunelveli District Collector, Mr Atul Anand, seeking to restrain Tata Steel from carrying out mining activities at Kuttam in the district.
Tata Steel has signed a memorandum of understanding with the State Government to establish a multi-crore unit at Kuttam for producing titanium-di-oxide.
Kuttam, 75 km from Tirunelveli, is a coastal hamlet. The villagers residing in the region fear that if the proposed unit started its activities, groundwater level would go down causing intrusion of sea water into the land and farming in the region would be affected reducing their income.
The villagers want the district administration to restrain Tata Steel from drawing ground water and using water from the Thamirabarani. Tata Steel should be allowed mining only in the land they purchased with all precautions and establish a desalination plant to meet its water requirements, the sources said.
