P.S. Sundar

Coonoor , June 14

A RECORD volume of 18.42 lakh kg of teas has been catalogued for the auctions to be conducted by the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) on Thursday and Friday. Considering the huge volume, the auctions are expected to continue on Saturday as well. This had happened in the recent weeks.

The offering has been increasing since May. In the first auctions for the second-half of 2005 held on June 2, the volume hit the ceiling at 17.51 lakh kg. This was 1.84 lakh kg more than the previous week. In the next sale, a volume close to this - 17.15 lakh kg - was offered. For this week, the highest volume for the year has been catalogued.

This comprises 12.76 lakh kg of leaf and 5.66 lakh kg of dust grades. Of the leaf grades, 12.14 lakh kg consist of CTC and the balance 0.62 lakh kg, orthodox. Of the dust grades, 4.67 lakh kg comprise CTC, while the balance 0.99 lakh kg orthodox.

In all, of the 18.42 lakh kg to be offered, as much as 16.81 lakh kg belong to the CTC category and only 1.61 lakh kg come under the orthodox family.

The huge volume is unable to attract matching demand. The buyers are aware of the plentiful teas chasing them both inside and outside the auction hall. The rains continue to hit the growing belts and the buyers are anticipating further increase in the crop.
