SCHAWK India, the joint venture between the Chennai-based RKKR group and the $700-million Schawk Inc, has plans to cater to the domestic packaging needs of the emerging retail and FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) industry.

Schawk India currently serves as an outsourcing destination for some of Schawk's clients across the globe.

Schawk Inc, a provider of digital imaging graphic services for consumer products and brand imaging solutions, entered the Indian market with the acquisition of Seven Worldwide, which was RKKR's earlier partner.

Mr Rajiv Rai, President, RKKR Group, said that the investment in the venture is about $ 2 million. The new studio was set up six months ago in the RKKR campus in central Chennai. The company's services include artwork management, prepress and print management services.

Schawk's client list includes P&G, Wal Mart, Unilever, GSK, Heinz and Kellogg's. He said that with large brands looking at the growing Indian market the need for high quality packaging would grow. The other plus points in India's favour are the skilled workforce and the cost advantage for creative outsourcing, he said.

Mr David Schawk, President and Chief Executive Officer, Schawk Inc, said that the company believed in delivering branding imaging solutions locally. This strategy has proved to be successful for the company in other parts of the world, especially China.

Mr Schawk is scheduled to meet Mr N. Narayanan, Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary, to discuss Schawk's operations in the State and how the company can assist Indian companies upgrade packaging to suit US and European markets.

He would also be meeting the Union Finance Minister on Wednesday.
