IndiGo orders 100 Airbus jets

Ashwini Phadnis

New Delhi , June 16

A NEW low-cost airline IndiGo on Thursday announced its intention to purchase 100 Airbus A-320 family aircraft.

These aircraft are to be used to launch operations in the domestic skies within the next six to nine months.

The new airline venture is being jointly promoted by InterGlobe Enterprises Ltd and Mr Rakesh Gangwal, who during his two-decade long career in aviation has worked in senior management positions with leading airlines, including United Airlines, Air France and US Airways. The A-320 family includes the Airbus A-320, A-321 and A-319 aircraft.

The Managing Director, InterGlobe, Mr Rahul Bhatia, told Business Line that the airline plans to purchase all 100 aircraft. "We will be airborne in the next six to nine months. The aircraft will arrive in batches and we plan to get between 15 and 19 aircraft in the first batch. The aircraft will be a mix of Airbus A-319 and A-320. The aircraft are being custom-built for the airline," Mr Bhatia said.

The airline is to follow a "dynamic pricing strategy" with fares being driven by market demand. IndiGo was given a no-objection certificate by the Government last year.

Meanwhile, Air Sahara has leased two Boeing 777-200 Extended Range (ER) aircraft. The aircraft are to be used to operate daily flights between London and Delhi.

The airline was recently given permission to operate daily flights to the UK from October this year. The aircraft, taken on lease from International Lease Finance Company, will offer passengers the option of flying either in economy or business class.
