New Projects Industry & Economy - Medical Institutions & Hospitals Hindujas plan hospital in Sri Lanka M. Ramesh
Chennai , June 18 THE Hinduja group plans to put up a hospital in Sri Lanka. This was revealed by Mr Sanjay Sudhir, First Secretary, Indian High Commission, Colombo, at a seminar on `Tamil Nadu - Leveraging trade agreements for growth' organised here by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). He said the group was looking for land and the proposal was at an initial stage. No further details are available. When contacted, sources in the Hinduja group told Business Line that the proposal was at an "exploratory stage" and was really a response to a request from the Sri Lankan Government to set up a hospital there. They said the group had first to identify the needs of the local population and see if the required competencies were available with the Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai. Mr Sudhir said the National Thermal Power Corporation was planning a 900-MW coal-fired power plant at Puttulam, in the island. (Earlier media reports on the subject mentioned a 300 MW project.) Mr Sudhir said that at present there are 73 Indian companies operating in Sri Lanka with investments of about $200 million. There are 75 projects in the pipeline, with a cumulative investment of $220 million. Later, speaking to Business Line, he said the problem of a sudden surge in copper imports - which gave rise to suspicions of a possible circumvention of rules of origin - had been solved by fixing a floor price for copper scrap.
