Right to information

Finally the `Right to information' has become a reality with the President giving the nod to the Bill. The legislation entitles every citizen to have access to information controlled by public authorities.

Under the bill, it is obligatory on the part of every public authority to provide information and maintain records on its operations.

The Act also imposes stringent penalties for failure to provide information or obstructing the same.

One hopes, greater access to information will make the administration more responsible, apart from preventing corruption and injustice.
